Since then I have bought, cleaned, repaired and re-homed, to good homes, over twenty different typewriters. I genuinely enjoy working on and working with these machines. Their functionality is something I naturally understand and their aesthetic is warmth to my creative energy. Sharing this with others is what it’s all about.
Each month I will take on two typewriters that are in need of some TLC. I offer the following;
Cleaning: Using cleaning solvents and instruments that are typewriter friendly I clean the frame, keys, and the inside of the typewriter. This includes cleaning the metal slugs of any gunked up ink. Dirty slugs can affect the appearance of the type-font imprint leaving the lettering looking smudgy on paper. Clean slugs produce a crisper and more defined imprint. I also clean the slug’s metal rods of dirt buildup. Dirty rods often cause sticky keys. Lastly, in places that are accessible I work at minimizing rust. The purpose of the cleaning is to increase the typewriter’s efficiency and aesthetic while preserving and enhancing the machines original design.
Diagnosis: I was surprised at how many of the repairs I’ve performed on various machines required only minor adjustments. The key was learning the process of figuring out what adjustments needed to be made. If you’ve ever looked at the underbelly of a typewriter you know right away a good amount of design and engineering are at work. Every component has a purpose and a function that is often tied to another function. While I am not an expert by any stretch I am usually spot on when it comes to diagnosing the core cause and remedy of the typewriters I’ve worked on. Some I can fix, some I can’t. Either way, I’ll let you know of any issues with the typewriter and what’s required to fix it.
Maintenance: After the diagnosis is complete a determination is made as to whether or not the maintenance or fix is something I can do. Nothing is done in this respect prior to consulting with the owner of the typewriter. If the fix is something in my wheelhouse of ability we’ll discuss cost and timeline. If not, we can still discuss alternative solutions.
Costs: The cost for a diagnosis and cleaning is $79. Maintenance is separate though often included no extra cost if the maintenance is in the realm of adjustment.
Turnaround is about a week unless discussed otherwise.
