Standing on a highway on-ramp with your thumb pointed to the sky can rapidly descend into the sordid if you’re not careful. From my experience it’s often the mad or the desperate who take to tramping about on foot. I’m cut from the former – mad enough to spend months on the road hitchhiking from one place to another with no fixed destination in mind … searching for answers I don’t have questions for. Personally, I can’t recall ever having met a straight-edge hitcher; they’re all cut from the unconventional, and all of them mad to some degree–mad for understanding, for acceptance, for solitude, for survival, and every once in a while, for adventure.
